In January, when the weather brought multiple days of extreme cold, record or near-record electricity demand, and significant stress for both the electric and natural gas systems across the PJM footprint, the ISO was able to call on sufficient generation to serve electricity demand, cover reserves, and provide enough exports to keep neighboring grids stable, incurring $798 million in out-of-market “uplift” costs in the process.
